Tobishima Island

📍 Yamagata, Sakata

Yamagata's only inhabited offshore island, a tiny green dot an hour by ferry from Sakata — clear blue water, seabird colonies, fresh-grilled fish, and a slow, salt-air pace that feels a world away from the mainland summer.

Out in the Japan Sea, about 75 minutes by ferry from the port of Sakata, floats Tobishima — Yamagata’s only inhabited offshore island, and one of its best-kept summer secrets.

Why It’s Interesting

It’s tiny, green, and gloriously slow. The water around it runs clear blue, perfect for snorkeling and poking around tide pools; the cliffs host seabird colonies (it’s a birdwatcher’s favorite); and the handful of island eateries grill fish caught that morning. There are no big-ticket sights — the point is the island pace: salt air, fishing boats, quiet walks, and the simple novelty of being an hour’s sail from anywhere. For kids, the boat ride itself is half the adventure.

Best Time to Visit

Summer, for the clearest water, the birdlife, and the warmest sea — but always with an eye on the ferry weather, which can cancel sailings.

Getting There

From Sakata Station, head to the port and take the ferry across. Check return times carefully so you don’t miss the last boat back.
