Yunohama Beach
📍 Yamagata, Tsuruoka
A long, gentle sand beach on the Japan Sea coast near Tsuruoka, with shallow swimming water, a torii standing out in the waves, and famously glowing sunsets — Yamagata's easygoing summer seaside, with a hot spring right behind it.
When the August heat settles over Yamagata’s inland basins, locals head for the coast — and one of the friendliest stretches is Yunohama Beach, a long arc of sand on the Japan Sea just west of Tsuruoka.
Why It’s Interesting
It’s an easygoing, family-style seaside: gentle, shallow water that suits younger swimmers, soft sand for castles, beach huts and shaved ice in season, and a small torii gate standing out in the waves that makes for a classic photo. The Japan Sea coast is famous for its sunsets, and Yunohama delivers — the sky and water turning gold and pink behind the torii. Best of all, a hot-spring town sits right behind the beach, so you can rinse off the salt in an onsen before dinner.
Best Time to Visit
Summer (July–August) for swimming and beach life; the sunsets are worth the trip in any season.
Getting There
Local train or bus from Tsuruoka Station to the Yunohama coast — easy to combine with the Kamo Aquarium just down the shore.
