Mount Haguro Five-Story Pagoda
📍 Yamagata, Tsuruoka
At the foot of sacred Mt. Haguro, a 600-year-old wooden five-story pagoda stands alone among giant cedars — reached by a hushed avenue of 2,446 stone steps lined by 1,000-year-old trees, one of Tohoku's most atmospheric walks.
Mt. Haguro is the most accessible of the Dewa Sanzan, the three sacred mountains at the heart of Yamagata’s mountain-worship tradition. The pilgrim’s path begins at the Zuishinmon gate and climbs 2,446 stone steps through a cathedral of cedars — and just a few minutes up stands the prize.
Why It’s Interesting
The five-story pagoda is around 600 years old, unpainted weathered wood, standing utterly alone among 1,000-year-old cedars with no other buildings in sight. The effect is hushed and timeless — dappled light, towering trunks, birdsong, and this perfect tower. Beyond it, the stone stairway continues all the way to the summit shrine for those who want the full pilgrimage, passing a famous giant cedar and a teahouse with valley views. It’s deeply atmospheric and, near the bottom at least, very doable with kids.
Best Time to Visit
Cool and green in summer; the cedar avenue glows in autumn color. Mornings are quietest.
Getting There
Bus from Tsuruoka Station to the Zuishinmon gate (base) or the summit. Even a short walk in from the gate reaches the pagoda.
