Ushiku Daibutsu

One of the tallest statues on Earth: a 120-metre bronze Buddha visible from miles across the Ibaraki plain, with an elevator inside that lifts you to a viewing deck in its chest.

You see it long before you arrive: a serene bronze face rising 120 metres over the rice fields of Ibaraki, three times the height of New York’s Statue of Liberty. Completed in 1993, the Ushiku Daibutsu held the record as the world’s tallest statue for years and remains one of the tallest bronze figures anywhere.

Why It’s Interesting

Most “great Buddhas” you admire from the outside. This one you go inside. An elevator carries you up through four themed floors to a viewing gallery at chest height — roughly 85 metres up — where small windows frame the plains stretching toward Tsukuba. The sheer, slightly absurd scale of it is the whole point.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round, but spring is special: the grounds fill with flowers, and on clear days the contrast of color against the dark bronze is striking. Summer evenings sometimes feature illumination events.

Tips

The grounds also include a small petting zoo and gardens, making this an easy, low-effort outing with kids.

Field report

The Ushiku Daibutsu is 120 metres of bronze Buddha standing over the Ibaraki plain — one of the tallest statues on Earth, three times the Statue of Liberty's figure, visible from so far away that your approach becomes a slow lesson in scale.

There's an elevator inside. You ride up through the interior — floors of scripture, thousands of small golden Buddhas glowing in the dark — to a viewing level in the chest, where windows the size of postage stamps (his scale, not mine) frame the plain. I looked out of a Buddha's ribcage at flower gardens shaped like his own silhouette below. Architecture as theology as engineering.

Spring wraps the base in cherry blossoms and baby animals (there's a small petting zoo, tonal whiplash included free). Clear days from the chest: Skytree and Fuji. Big everything. Bring your smallness.
