Momijidani Otsuribashi (Shiobara)

The Shiobara Onsen valley, west of Nasu proper, is gorge country — and the most exhilarating way to feel it is to walk straight out over the void. The Momijidani Otsuribashi (“Maple Valley Suspension Bridge”) stretches 320 metres across the river canyon, swaying gently underfoot the whole way.

Why It’s Interesting

It’s the longest of the Shiobara valley’s suspension bridges, and the crossing is a low-key thrill: the deck bounces, the river rushes far below, and the forested walls rise on both sides. The name is a promise kept in autumn, when the maples turn the entire gorge red and gold and the bridge becomes one of the best foliage viewpoints in Tochigi. Even out of season, the swaying walk and the canyon views are worth the small toll.

Best Time to Visit

Lovely year-round, with the late-October to mid-November maples as the headline. Mornings are calmest and least crowded.

Getting There

Easiest by car into the Shiobara Onsen valley; bus from Nishi-Nasuno Station otherwise. Combine it with a hot-spring soak nearby.
